Plan As You Go, Not Where To Go

Trailer Video

This video explains why traditional goal-based planning may not always be appropriate. How can you plan when there is so much uncertainty? This is more acute for new businesses or new markets when there are too many unknowns and too little information.

Listen To The Interview On The OARSome Morning Show

It was an honour to appear on the OARsome Morning Show on 17 October 2016. The host, Jeff Harford, interviewed me and asked me about my background, B2M and the new show B2M Business Insights.

INTERVIEW

Jeff Harford

The interview lasts 17 minutes and it covers a range of topics, starting with my education when was torn between Mathematics and Physics in one direction and Modern Languages in the other direction. Finally I resolved this conflict by doing both and studying Engineering followed by German and French at Cambridge University in England.  The correct term is "reading", which is a little archaic.

I created this Mind Map to gather my thoughts and to use as a guide during the interview. My career evolved from structural engineering to project management  The big change came after completing an MBA at Otago University in Dunedin, as  I worked as a financial management consulting before being appointed Trade Commissioner for New Zealand in Germany. This was the foundation for a second career in international marketing, which has now changed to business coaching on strategy, marketing and social media.

I believe in thinking differently and in challenging perceived ideas and ways of working. Since I am naturally curious, I am always seeking new and better ways of doing business.  Consequently the way that I interact with my coaching clients is by asking probing questions as part of a structured conversation. These questions stimulate lively discussion that can be the catalyst for fresh insights and new ideas.
