Do You Need Better Strategy or Better Implementation?
This question is intended to challenge the accepted wisdom of getting strategy "right" before devoting resources to implementation. This approach is fraught with danger, in particular with the rapidly increasing rate of change. By the time your "perfect strategy" has been thoroughly reviewed and finally receieved approval, it is already dated.
There are some alternatives and this page will look at better ways to develop and implement strategy.
Get The Foundations Right: Start With The WHY
Most people in your company know WHAT you do and some of them know HOW you do it. Very few understand WHY you do it. As Simon Sinek explains in this video, making money is simply a result. It is even more important that you convey your WHY to your prospects and customers.,
So Why Are You in Business?
- What is your Purpose?
- What are the real reasons?
- What will drive you and your team?

THE ART OF ACTION
How Leaders Close The Gaps Between Plans, Actions and Results.
How often does planning achieve the desired results? More planning is not the answer!
Let's hear from the author, Stephen Bungay
What gets in the way?
- Too many goals.
- Too little clarity.
- Lack of alignment with how performance is measured.
- Too little direction from the top.
- Too much interference from the top.
Bungay's Directed Opportunism
Now - Where - How
There are three questions you need to ask and they must be in the following order:
- Where are you NOW?
- WHERE do you want to get to?
- HOW will you get there?
These three apparently simple questions are at the heart of Mindshop Business Planning. The NOW is your starting point and the next step is to define WHERE you want to be. The danger is to jump to the HOW. This is like rushing into "solution mode" without first being clear about the problem you are trying to solve.
Another important consideration is to strike the right balance between the short-term and the long-term. The Key Issues are the ones you are struggling with now and some of these issues may be keeping you awake at night.
