In This Episode, You'll Get Some Great Tips on Thinking Inside The Box...

  • Why thinking outside the box may not be conducive to making good decisions.
  • Unlimited choices can lead to paralysis, as the brain can only cope with a limited number of choices. .
  • Constraint Storming can be very effective, by removing or adding one constraint at a time.

Questions posed by the interview: Thinking Inside The Box

  • What constraints does your business face? How well have you defined these constraints and have you distinguished between the good and bad constraints?
  • Have you tried Constraint Storming as opposed to Brainstorming?  This means adding or removing one constraint at a time.
  • Do you regard constraints as being problems? So the way you define the constraint may be more important than the constraint itself and you may be able to differentiate your product or service.

Introducing Steve Silvey

Steve Silvey

Steve graduated with a biology degree and then made the obvious move into chartered accounting. Over time he was drawn more and more to the role of innovation in business strategy and how small companies compete against bigger, more dominant competitors. After a period in general management roles Steve became involved in start-ups and technology.

He is now an investment manager foPowerhouse Ventures, where his role is to identify new science based technologies, mainly from the University of Otago, that can be turned into businesses that compete globally. He builds the investment case, finds the right people to be in the business, and incubates them as start-ups. Steve is a director of several early stage and fast-growing companies

Identify your constraints so that you can manage them and distinguish between good and bad constraints. Remove or add a constraint.

  1. I really enjoyed the podcast this morning. Thinking inside the box….a way actually another way of thinking outside of the box. Given that thinking outside of the box is now a days almost the norm…the most often proposed way of doing things, To then turn that around and thinking indie the box is perhaps the new thinking outside of the box. Or I could just be overthinking this whole thing. In any event I will take some time today to do something about the constraints I see in my business. Then to consider how these might in fact be self induced constraints and if thought about differently might be new opportunities to consider more carefully. And then I will think about adding constraints in order to declutter and perhaps eliminate the 1000 really good ideas everyone is telling me I should be considering. Bottom line….there is some useful thinking to be done in considering the constraints that may just be the best thing for the business today. Cheers, and thank you, Brian
